Gen Z Found Its Comedies in Adults and Overcompensating — But Does TV Value Their Voice?

This year’s breakout comedies for Gen Z viewers, without a doubt, have been FX’s Adults and Prime Video’s Overcompensating.

The Gen Z generation has been avid watchers of dramas like The Summer I Turned Pretty and teen fantasy/supernatural series like Teen Wolf and Shadowhunters

But in terms of comedy shows, none have really stood out as truly belonging to the Gen Z audience the way that Overcompensating and Adults have.

Both shows premiered in May of this year and quickly became popular with the Gen Z demographic in particular.

However, since the shows were released, the networks have yet to officially announce the renewal for either Adults or Overcompensating, which might be a bad sign for the series.

Are Adults and Overcompensating On the Chopping Block?

It’s hard to say for sure whether Adults and Overcompensating have a shot at getting another season.

With streaming shows in particular, the timeline for renewal can vary from a few weeks after a show airs to many months after.

The popularity of both shows among Gen Z has surely demonstrated that younger viewers value these shows and want to see more.

This is especially valuable during a time in which Gen Z people often indicate a preference for viewing short-term online content rather than tuning into TV shows.

If Overcompensating and Adults can show that Gen Z still care about comedy shows, then it’s absolutely worth keeping them around to keep this audience engaged and grow a new generation of comedy viewers.

However, that might not be the most important metric that streamers consider when making a decision about renewals.

At the end of the day, the general streaming numbers will matter more as well as awards season buzz.

But it is also essential to recognize that Adults and Overcompensating fulfill a distinct niche within the comedy genre for Gen Z audiences that hasn’t yet been accomplished at this scale.

Therefore, it’d be a real shame for both shows to meet an early end and to have their status with an undertapped audience in the comedy genre go to waste.

Of course, the decision isn’t up to me, but I’m definitely crossing my fingers that Prime Video and FX announce the fate of Adults and Overcompensating soon.

Comedy is For Everyone, But It’s Nice to See New Perspectives In Comedy

As mentioned earlier, comedy has never been particularly geared towards the Gen Z generation the same way that dramas have subgenres of soapy teen dramas or supernatural thrillers.

Comedy, as a category, has always been a little more universal than drama, but that doesn’t mean that specificity has no value.

Adults and Overcompensating are both comedies that help make the genre a little more accessible to younger viewers.

Additionally, the characters in the shows are in their early 20s and clearly are also written by people around the same age.

Thus, the Gen Z experience is inherently baked into the comedy of Overcompensating and Adults.

Again, comedy is for everyone, and the fact that people across all generations have shown interest in these shows demonstrates that they have the potential for longevity.

So, it’s time to keep an eye out for what happens to the future of Adults and Overcompensating, as it could potentially make or break whether Gen Z have a place in the world of comedy TV.

Have you watched either Adults or Overcompensating? What did you think of the shows, and are you optimistic about potential renewals?
