Why Was Chevy Chase Such a Good Talk Show Guest and Such a Bad Host?
Today, comedian and actor Chevy Chase has a wildly uneven reputation. Some love him from his old National Lampoon movies or the 1980 classic Caddyshack (not the sequel). Others jump on the hate bandwagon, noting his numerous altercations with past colleagues. Regardless of where you stand, no one can deny he was instrumental in popularizing Saturday Night Live. However, the turning point in his life was The Chevy Chase Show. The media spared him no patience, as they did with Conan O'Brien or Jay Leno, who both got off to incredibly awkward starts. Reviewers and TV historians have since eviscerated his brief two-month tenure as the low point in the talk show genre.
