And Just Like That… HBO Max Puts Sex and the City Spinoff Out of Its Misery

Usually, cancellations are quietly buried after business hours on a Friday. But HBO Max decided to drop some big news bright and early — and for fans still watching And Just Like That, it’s a bittersweet update.
Let’s be real: Most viewers tuned in because it’s a sequel to Sex and the City, one of the defining TV hits of the late ’90s and early 2000s.
The streaming service confirmed Friday morning that And Just Like That will not be returning for another season, and will conclude with a two-part series finale, airing Thursday, August 7 and 14.
Showrunner Michael Patrick King took to Instagram with a statement claiming that the decision was made while penning the And Just Like That Season 3 finale.
“And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end,” the statement, shared on social media, reads.
“While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”
“Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12.”
And Just Like That’s Ending Explained
“SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season.”
“It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years,” the lengthy post concludes.
And Just Like That reunited Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis for a continuation of their iconic roles, picking up years after the events of the second Sex and the City movie.
While HBO Max has reported solid viewership, the series has spent much of its run under intense scrutiny.
Google the show’s name, and you’ll find a wall of critical op-eds questioning its writing and tone — some even joking that AI might have penned it.
One glaring absence? Kim Cattrall. The Samantha Jones actress famously stepped away from the franchise amid her long-rumored rift with SJP.
She returned only for a quick cameo that didn’t involve sharing the screen with her former co-stars — and likely collected a hefty paycheck for it.
Without her, the magic of the original was hard to recapture, and the series often stumbled in its attempt to reinvent itself.
So, is it the right time to end it? For some, absolutely.
For others, it’s still tough to say goodbye to Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte — no matter how bumpy the ride has been.
Sarah Jessica Parker Pays Tribute to Iconic Franchise
The cast took to social media to celebrate the franchise’s legacy after the announcement.
“Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years. I think I have loved her most of all,” Parker wrote.
“I know others have loved her just as I have. Been frustrated, condemned and rooted for her. The symphony of all those emotions has been the greatest soundtrack and most consequential companion.”
“Therefore the most sentimental and profound gratitude and lifetime of debt.
“To you all, this chapter complete,” she added and called the spinoff a “joy, adventure, the greatest kind of hard work alongside the most extraordinary talent of 380 that includes all the brilliant actors who joined us.”
“I am profoundly sad,” added Davis on Instagram.
“I love our whole beautiful cast and crew. 400 artisans working so hard on our show with deep love. And to our loyal fans, we love you forever and ever.”
