Brad Pitt reveals why Quentin Tarantino isn’t directing ‘The Adventures Of Cliff Booth’

Brad Pitt has revealed why Quentin Tarantino won’t be directing Once Upon A Time In Hollywood spin-off The Adventures Of Cliff Booth.

The film, which will be released on Netflix, is being directed by David Fincher, although the script will be written by Tarantino.

Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki and Scott Caan will also star.

Now, Pitt has revealed why Taratino won’t be directing. He told Deadline: “This is something Quentin Tarantino wrote. It’s an episode, not really a sequel, of the character from Once Upon A Time. He didn’t want to direct it at this point, so our friend David Fincher stepped in.”

Pitt added: “We’re gonna start in July, it’s gonna be really fun.”

According to a report by Playlist, the film, which was announced earlier this year, is likely to have a $200million (£146.9million) budget, with Tarantino receiving $20million (£14.6million) for his screenplay.

The original movie, written and directed by Tarantino, followed the adventures of a fading TV star (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt man (Pitt) in an alternative vision of 1960s Hollywood. The 2019 film was a critical and box office success, making $329.4million (£242million) and becoming the director’s second highest grossing movie after 2012’s Django Unchained.

The upcoming Booth film would be an unusual step for the Pulp Fiction filmmaker on a few counts: the last time he wrote a film that he didn’t direct was 1996’s From Dusk Til Dawn; and he has been a vocal critic of streamers such as Netflix, famously preferring physical media and film projection for watching movies. It would also be the first traditional sequel to one of his directed movies: Kill Bill was split into two parts but is considered one story.

The Adventures Of Cliff Booth is believed to be an evolution of Tarantino’s script The Movie Critic, which was intended to be the director’s tenth and final film until he abandoned the idea. It’s unknown what story he will be telling instead, but the director recently disclosed that he would likely not do anything until his five-year-old son is six or older.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood received five stars from NME when it was released in 2019 and was “described as Tarantino’s most satisfying work in decades.”
