Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ trailer is showing in cinemas now – here’s what’s in it

The trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s forthcoming epic The Odyssey has debuted in cinemas, playing exclusively before screenings of Jurassic World: Rebirth.
In keeping with Nolan’s preference for his trailers to be a cinematic experience, the trailer wasn’t released online, similar to the rollout of the trailer for Oppenheimer in 2023. However, it ended up on the Internet anyway.
Nonetheless, the release of a teaser has come surprisingly early given that the film, which stars Matt Damon in the lead role as the heroic Ithacan king Odysseus, won’t be out in the UK until July 17, 2026. In addition, the adaptation of the famed ancient Greek poem has also not yet been completed. As such, the teaser is predictably brief.
The teaser opens with shots of a dark ocean along with the voiceover: “Darkness. Zeus’ law smashed to pieces. I’m without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, he won it.”
It then cuts to a scene with Tom Holland as Odysseus’ son Telemachus, having a conversation with an as-yet-unnamed character played by Jon Bernthal.
“I have to find out what happened to my father,” Telemachus says, to which Bernthal’s character declares to a room, “Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have a story? Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor. Some said he perished. Some said he’s imprisoned.”
It concludes with a shot of driftwood at sea with a man lying on it, presumably Damon as Odysseus.
The Odyssey will star Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Anne Hathaway in central roles, with Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Zendaya and Jon Bernthal also set to play supporting characters.
In January, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin and Samantha Morton were also added to the cast while more recent additions include Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Nick E Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales, Maurice Compte, Michael Vlamis and Iddo Goldberg. Shōgun star Cosmo Jarvis was also added to the cast as filming began in Morocco in March.
Behind the scenes, Nolan looks set to continue his 10-year working relationship with Oscar-nominated director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema and will be writing/ producing the film alongside longtime partner Emma Thomas. Ludwig Goransson is also rumoured to be scoring the project after creating the celebrated music for Tenet and Oppenheimer.
Notably, The Odyssey is being shot entirely using Imax cameras, making it the first film with a major scope to do so. With a budget of $250 million, it will be the most expensive film of Nolan’s career.
