Classic ‘Final Fantasy’ game is getting a remaster

Square Enix has announced the long-awaited remaster of a classic Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy Tactics was originally released in 1997 and became a cult classic. Now the tactical role-playing game is being remastered. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is an “enhanced” version of the game and features “everything that made the original so acclaimed”.

“That includes the epic story, the satisfyingly strategic battles and the flexible job system – but it also adds new content and features that make the game even more fun to play,” said Square Enix in an accompanying blog post.

New additions for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles include a brand new user interface, updated visuals, a new ‘Tactical View’ option to make strategies easier to plot, new difficulty levels and full voice acting in both Japanese and English.

Also included in The Ivalice Chronicles is the original Final Fantasy Tactics game. “This version stays true to the original in almost every aspect, but includes some handy features such as auto save.”

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will launch September 30 for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

Speaking about the remastered game on social media, original director Yasumi Matsuno explained that the original was created in “an era when many were robbed of hope, when dreams were measured by their price tag.”

“Against this historical backdrop, I crafted a story,” he continued. “It was the story of Ramza, a young man who fought tirelessly against the entrenched social class system. It was the story of Delita, who sought to take advantage of this confusion and despair to advance his own social position. It was a story of a peculiar destiny, in which friendship and betrayal intertwine. And now, in 2025—a time when inequality and division are still deeply rooted in our society—I offer this story once again. The will to resist is in your hands.”

The news of the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster now means the only game not listed in a 2021 leak of upcoming Square Enix projects to be released is an updated version of Final Fantasy 9. Earlier this year, it was reported the project was still in “active development” but wouldn’t launch in 2025.

In other news, fans have been praising the Nintendo Switch 2, which launched today (June 5).
