‘Elden Ring’ fans unsure about movie adaptation: “They gotta get weird with it for it to work”

Elden Ring fans have their doubts about the newly-confirmed movie adaptation, which will be written and directed by Alex Garland.

Released in 2022, Elden Ring is an action-role playing game that was developed by FromSoftware using an epic fantasy world that was partially created by Game Of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

Rumours about a movie adaptation have been circulating since the game was first launched but the project was officially confirmed last week. “To bring the epic world and intense action of Elden Ring to film, the project will be led by filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Civil War, Warfare) as writer and director,” said a press release. Martin will act as producer for the adaptation, which will be released by A24.

“We’re truly excited to bring the world of Elden Ring to fans in a new form, outside the game. Stay tuned. The path ahead is only beginning,” added publishers Bandai Namco.

However gaming fans aren’t so sure about the project. “This could be great. Or it could be downright traumatic. I worry it will be the latter,” one fan wrote on Reddit, with others worried about how the 60 hour story of Elden Ring and the 26 hours of the Shadow Of The Erdtree expansion will translate into a single feature film. “The hard part is the writers room…good luck Alex you’ve got your work cut out for you,” said another fan. “I honestly have no idea how you adapt this in a satisfying way,” wrote a third.

“Love Alex Garland. Love Elden Ring. Have no idea how this can work. FromSoft make purposefully obtuse non-narrative centric games that reward people digging for theme and lore. How in the fuck does this translate to a strictly visual medium except as a hyper niche arthouse production,” asked one fan. “Zero faith in movie adaptations of video games. Especially with how Elden Ring‘s story and lore are presented,” wrote another.

However some fans are more hopeful. “A24 is the only studio that has a chance to make this complete puzzle of a story work as a film. I think if they just focus on the tarnished without getting into the world building weeds too much it will be fine,” said one fan.

“I’m shocked by these negative comments. Alex Garland definitely has the chops to adapt this. I also think it’s one of the few video game IP’s that worthy of an adaptation,” shared another. “They gotta get weird with it for it to work,” added a third fan.

Last year, Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki said there was an “active” interest in an adaptation of the game, but only if he and the rest of FromSoftware weren’t too heavily involved.

“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play,” he explained in an interview with The Guardian.

However George R.R. Martin’s involvement in the project has annoyed Game Of Thrones fans, who are still waiting for the Winds Of Winter book to be finished.

In other news, Sony is reducing the price of the PlayStation 5 console for a limited time as part of their Days Of Play sale.
