The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman reveals why he dropped out of Star Trek 4and seemingly teases what might have gone down behind the scenes. In the summer of 2021, Matt Shakman was hired to direct Star Trek 4 following the critical and ratings hit of WandaVision, the kickoff film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Multiverse Saga. At the same time, Spider-Man trilogy director Jon Watts was set to help the MCU reboot of The Fantastic Four. Yet by April 2022, Watts had dropped out, and Shakman ultimately took the gig in September of that year, leaving Star Trek 4.
