‘Final Fantasy 14’ boss apologises for frustrating updates: “We want to improve”

Final Fantasy 14 boss Naoki Yoshida has apologised for a “decline” in the quality of the game, telling fans the team wants to make things better.

When it originally launched back in 2010, online multiplayer game Final Fantasy 14 was a critical and commercial disaster, with players faced with numerous game-breaking bugs and missing content. A new version of the game launched in 2013 and went on to become the most profitable Final Fantasy  game in history, with more than 30million active users as of January 2025.

However in recent months, players have once again been faced with buggy updates and developers have had to release a string of hotfixes. Addressing the issue during a recent livestream, Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida said  “I’ve been feeling that our quality of service has declined recently, I am very sorry for that.”

“It feels like we got used to things a bit too much and got comfortable,” he continued (via PC Gamer). “We grew bigger and processes didn’t fully work the way we had intended them to, we want to improve this again. Especially with new and big content we have recently released, this was difficult. We want to keep providing fun and engaging content and we will strive to do better.”

Last year it was announced a version of Final Fantasy 14 would be available to play on mobile. No release date was shared at the time but last week, the game launched in China. According to reports, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile provides access to the main story of A Realm Reborn, five playable races and nine combat jobs, though further content could be added in the future.

The last major expansion for Final Fantasy 14 was Dawntrail, which launched in 2024 and introduced players to a new era. Yoshida went on to say that he was working on the story for the next three expansions, which will be spread over the next 10 years.

In other news, the team behind Minecraft rival Hytale have announced they’ve scrapped the highly-anticipated game after working on it for 10 years.
