‘GTA 6’ fans annoyed about new 2026 release date: “13 years for a game is crazy”
Rockstar finally announced the release date for GTA 6 earlier today (May 2) but fans aren’t excited about having to wait another 12 months.
Grand Theft Auto 6 was officially unveiled back in 2023 alongside a 2025 release window. Rockstar and publishers Take-Two have repeatedly shrugged off the many rumours about a delay but today, they confirmed GTA 6 won’t be released until May 26, 2026.
“We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,” said the brief statement. “With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and GTA 6 is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
The news of the delay hasn’t gone down well with fans. “They expect us to survive until then,” wrote one fan. “13 years for a game is fucking crazy…,” said another, with Grand Theft Auto 5 coming out back in 2013.

“The PlayStation 2 had 3 GTA generations (3, Vice City and San Andreas). GTA 5 had 3 PlayStation generations. Game development times have really become something else,” added another fan.” I like how they say ‘sorry this is later than you expected’, because really… it’s later than they announced,” wrote a third.
Some fans are frustrated the news of delay wasn’t softened with a new trailer or screenshots, while others are expecting GTA 6 to be pushed back even further. “So Christmas 2026, got it,” one fan said after the delay was announced.” I’m with you on that one. I feel like they’re gaming shareholders,” added another. It wouldn’t be the first time Rockstar have delayed a delayed release – Red Dead Redemption 2 was originally meant to launch fall 2017 but was pushed back to spring 2018 before eventually releasing in fall 2018.

However some people are looking on the bright side. “Are we going to get a flood of announcements now for games releasing this year in Oct/Nov,” asked one fan. “So many games were set to launch this year with no release date – the space after May was like a completely empty gap. Now that GTA 6 is delayed, the publishers are finally allowed to announce the dates for all the games coming out this year,” explained another.
“It’s one less Game Of The Year competitor for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33,” said another fan.
In other news, following reports of industry lay-offs, game cancellations and “laughable” price hikes, Millennial gamers have been getting nostalgic and telling Gen Z what they wouldn’t “understand” about the good ol’ days.
