Sent to lobby on behalf of Germany in the '30s, Consul Georg Gyssling exerted more influence over the US film industry than most major producers. All Hollywood movies of the Hays Code era were liable to be censored for some silly reason. As irksome as this was to filmmakers, it could have been much worse. Germany could (and did) fire Jews and communists from their own film industry, but they faced a bigger conundrum in foreign movies. Their biggest rivals flooded the Fatherland with high-quality comedies, romances, and dramas, but Hitler had an ace up his sleeve.
