‘Lilo & Stitch’ actor David Hekili Kenui Bell dies aged 46
David Hekili Kenui Bell, who starred in Disney‘s Lilo & Stitch live action reboot, has died.
The 46 year-old’s sister Jalene Kanani shared news of his death on her Facebook account. No cause of death has yet been shared.
“It is with a heavy heart I share that my sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome little brother David H K Bell will spend today in the company of our Heavenly Father,” she wrote.
In the live action movie, which was released last month, he played the character Big Hawaiian Dude, which is a nod to the Ice Cream Man in the animated films, who repeatedly drops his ice cream before he can eat it. In the recent version, Bell dropped shaved ice.
“We have launched a coroner’s inquest investigation (as is standard practice) and an autopsy is being scheduled to determine the exact cause of death,” a police spokesperson told People. “The investigation is ongoing at this time. No foul play is suspected.”
Bell also appeared in episodes of the Hawaii-set shows Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I., in addition to commercials for Kona Brewing.
His IMDb page also listed that he was working on Amazon MGM Studios’ forthcoming film The Wrecking Crew, which also stars Dave Bautista andJason Momoa.
In addition to acting, his sister said he loved doing voiceovers.
“You can hear him over the PA system on arrival at Kona Airport where he loved working to create an awesome and safe customer experience,” she wrote. “He was and will remain a bright and shining star.”
Kanani added that he loved social media. “Our last time together after returning home from the movie was just sitting on my living room couch talking story about life, having a seltzer and doing a little genealogy. Blessed by this and all the big and small moments, I will keep our memories alive,” she wrote.
Much like the original 2002 animated film, the live action movie follows a young orphan who is raised by her teenage sister, Nani after their parents’ death. Lilo develops a close bond with Stitch, a genetically engineered extraterrestrial creature, who she adopts as her pet.
Ahead of the film’s release, some fans weren’t happy with some of the character changes made.
