‘Ma 2’ confirmed with Octavia Spencer returning

A sequel to horror hit Ma is in development, with star Octavia Spencer reprising her lead role.

Released in 2019, the original film told the story of a group of teenagers in a small town who befriend a lonely middle-aged woman (Spencer), nicknamed Ma, who offers her basement as a place for them to party. The offer has three rules: one teen must stay sober, and never go upstairs. This deal turns deadly when the friends discover Ma’s obsessive tendencies, putting everyone who visits at risk.

The film, made by Blumhouse Productions (Get Out, The Purge), was a hit at the box office, making $61.2Million (£45.Million) from a mere $5Million (£3.6Million) budget. It has also proven popular online, developing a cult following on social media and enjoying high viewing numbers on streaming services such as Netflix.

Now, Variety reports that a follow-up is on the way. No director or release date is confirmed as of yet, as the sequel is in early stages, but Spencer will be returning in the title role.

“‘Ma’ has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma,” Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse Productions, said in a statement reported by the outlet. “Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round”.

NME’s three-star review of the movie described it as a “teen-horror-comedy your mother won’t like”, saying: “there are a lot of entertaining moments, and Spencer is delicious in her first villain role. Certainly, no one could be bored by Ma, which is as unpredictable as its unstable protagonist”.

The news comes as Blumhouse recently announced that they will be adapting beloved UK horror game Plasmophobia.
