‘Mafia’ fans are comparing new game to ‘Red Dead Redemption’ and ‘Uncharted’

The release date and price of Mafia: The Old Country has been shared alongside a new gameplay video.
Yesterday (May 8), 2K Games shared the ‘Whatever It Takes’ gameplay trailer for Mafia: The Old Country and confirmed the follow-up to 2016’s Mafia 3 would be released August 8 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It’s also been announced the game will cost £45.
Mafia: The Old Country is described as a “gritty mob story set in the brutal underworld of 1900s Sicily” and will sees players “fighting to survive as Enzo Favara and prove your worth to the Cosa Nostra in this immersive third-person action-adventure set during a dangerous, unforgiving era.”

When the game was first unveiled last year, the president of developers Hangar 13 said the game was “going back to the roots of what fans love about the franchise” with the team “crafting a deep, linear narrative with that classic mob movie feeling, visiting a stunning new setting, and delivering it all in a tight, focused package perfect for fans of immersive experiences.”
However following the gameplay reveal, some fans are worried The Old Country won’t feel much like a Mafia game.

“This game looks good, but it looks like it should be called Uncharted: The Old Country,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “The ONLY hint of Mafia I see in this trailer are the style of the cars. Everything else looks like an entirely different series. I’m not trying to be a stick in the mud because honestly, the game DOES look like a blast. I just find it weird that the Mafia series is going this direction. The trailer doesn’t have any of the things I would want from a Mafia game, but has most of the things I would want in a new Uncharted game.”
“It looks more like an Indiana Jones game than anything related to the Mafia series. Maybe they’re just showing off the more extreme segments of the game but stealthily going around murdering the military and having Red Dead Redemption horse chases/shootouts doesn’t really have the same vibes. If this trailer is showing off the majority of how the game will play, they really should have just made it a separate IP,” said another fan. “Red Dead Redemption: Sicily,” added a third.
Yesterday, developers Hangar 13 described Mafia: The Old Country as a “focused” experience. “We think there’s a large audience for compelling stories that don’t require massive time commitments,” added 2K president David Ismailer. “We’re excited to offer a game like Mafia: The Old Country in our portfolio, and to provide a linear highly-polished narrative experience that can easily complement the other more persistent games our players also love and engage with on a more consistent basis.”
In other news, Silent Hill 2 is set to get a “faithful” film adaptation with director Christophe Gans returning to the franchise.
