'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning' Director Talks Major Character Death: "The Story Was About Sacrifice"

Arguably, no death in the Mission: Impossible franchise weighed more heavily on IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) than that of Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) in 2023’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning. However, it turns out that director Christopher McQuarrie, a.k.a. McQ, as Tom Cruise likes to call him, had been contemplating a way to kill off another fan-favorite, Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), since before the filmmaker celebrated with Cruise and Henry Cavill over Mission: Impossible — Fallout’s enormous success back in 2018. Fast-forward seven years, and that's exactly what McQ did in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, which has now been playing in theaters since May 23 — and only now is McQuarrie finally sharing his thoughts on why Luther died.
