Palworld developers have confirmed another “disappointing” change is being made to the game after The Pokémon Company started legal action against them.

Last year, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company shared a joint statement announcing that they had filed a lawsuit against Palworld developers Pocketpair. The suit alleges that Palworld “infringes multiple patent rights” and Nintendo are “seeking an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages”.

Responding to the “truly unfortunate” lawsuit, Palworld creators said they were “unaware” of any infringements and would be working towards “appropriate legal proceedings”. Two months later, Pocketpair quietly removed a feature from the game that allowed players to summon Pals with spherical objects known as “Pal Spheres”.

In a new statement shared on social media, Pocketpair confirmed the change was made to appease Nintendo. “Several other game mechanics were also changed with this patch,” they wrote. “As many have speculated, these changes were indeed a result of the ongoing litigation. Everyone here at Pocketpair was disappointed that this adjustment had to be made, and we fully understand that many players feel the same frustration.”

Pocketpair went on to say they “must make yet another compromise,” as part of Patch v0.5.5, with players no longer able to use their Pals to glide around the map. “We understand that this will be disappointing for many, just as it is for us, but we hope our fans understand that these changes are necessary in order to prevent further disruptions to the development of Palworld.”

“We remain involved in prolonged legal proceedings regarding alleged patent infringement. We continue to dispute these claims and assert the invalidity of the patents in question. We also want to extend our apologies to our fans for the discomfort and concern this ongoing litigation has caused,” they added. “We remain committed to developing Palworld and delivering exciting new content to our fans.”

Last year, Pocketpair hit back at rumours Palworld had been snubbed from the 2024 Game Awards due to the legal battle with Nintendo. “Twitter has become such a banterless place. Stop being so over dramatic gamers,” wrote the game’s community manager. “Not everything is a conspiracy.“ The game launched on PlayStation last year, while plans for a mobile version were also announced.
