Rahim Redcar (FKA Christine & The Queens) accuses Lorde of copying “without crediting me as an inspiration”: “I guess you’re welcome”

Rahim Redcar (formerly known as Christine & The Queens) has accused Lorde of copying his work “without crediting me as an inspiration”.

Lorde released her new song, ‘Man Of The Year’, taken from her highly anticipated new album ‘Virgin’, yesterday (May 30), alongside a deeply personal music video that sees her take off her top, binding her chest with duct tape.

Shortly after the video’s release, Redcar took to his Instagram story to react to it, writing: “To lorde: I guess you’re welcome lol. So weird to see such constant elements of my work being digested and put forward without ever being credited as an inspiration.”

This may be in reference to the artist’s 2022 tour, in which he also used tape to cover his chest. “Erasure of my talent somehow happened because of my strange path? Do you think? What else was I supposed to do? Lie?,” he continued.

“I wonder if I will have one day the credit I deserve, and I say this with no bitterness, just genuine curiosity,” he added. “Let’s be real I am made to enjoy massive gigs so why can’t they honor the first flame?

“Oh well – back to making more amazing music am I right?”

Fans have been reacting to Redcar’s statement in the comments of his recent Instagram post, with one writing: “Sorry babe I love you but there’s no inspo in showcasing non-binary awakening, it’s her process, it’s not up to you to judge that or to think and pretend you’re the only non-binary artist out there.”

Another added: “You are so talented. No need to tear down another artist. I’m sorry not as many people as you would like are seeing your vision but just know there are many adoring fans of your incredible work over the last few years. Don’t tarnish it with petty insecurity. It doesn’t taste nice.”

Lorde’s gender evolution seems to be a prominent theme of her upcoming album. During an appearance at this year’s Met Gala, where she revealed that her outfit contained “Easter eggs” about the new album, she said at the time that her dress, which also featured tape on her breasts, “really represents where I’m at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman…”

Soon after, she suggested she didn’t mean anything by the “Easter eggs” comment, elaborating on her comments about where she’s at “gender-wise” and opening up about her past body image issues.

“My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room,” she said in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, before going on to explain the opening line of the first track on ‘Virgin’ that reads “Some days I’m a woman/Some days I’m a man and how it reflects her current headspace in terms of gender fluidity.

Lorde said to Rolling Stone: “[Chappell Roan] asked me this. She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’ And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’ I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.”

She also said that ‘Man of the Year’, “was fully representative of how [her] gender felt in that moment.” The song was partially inspired by her experience of trying on a pair of men’s jeans and showing a picture of it producer Jim-E Stack: “He was like, ‘I want to see the you that’s in this picture represented in the music.’ This was before I had any sense of my gender broadening at all.”

Lorde also recently announced that she will be hitting the road again this year for some headline tour dates across the UK, Europe and North America in celebration of the album. These kick off in September in Austin, Texas, and run through to December, where the tour wraps up with a final stop in Stockholm. Majority of the shows are sold out.

Special guests for the shows include The Japanese HouseNilüfer Yanya, Chanel Beads, Empress Of and Oklou, as well as Blood Orange – with Devonte Hynes featuring on the album – and co-producer Jim-E Stack. In the run-up to the album release and subsequent tour, Lorde has been sharing details about things that may have impacted her sound. These include candid discussions about her time overcoming eating struggles, and how the upcoming shows may be her “masterpiece”.
