‘Roblox’ sued over alleged child safety concerns

Roblox is being taken to court by a top prosecutor from the state of Louisiana over alleged child safety concerns.
In a suit filed yesterday (August 14) Attorney General Liz Murrill claimed that Roblox is the “perfect place for pedophiles” due to lax age-verification checks.
“Today I’m suing Roblox – the #1 gaming site for children and teens – and a breeding ground for sex predators,” she wrote on X. “Due to Roblox’s lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana. Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritises user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety,” she said in an accompanying statement.
“Every parent should be aware of the clear and present danger [posed] to their children by Roblox so they can prevent the unthinkable from ever happening in their own home.” As part of the 42-page filing, Murrill used in-game experiences like Escape From Epstein Island and Public Showers as evidence against Roblox.

The suit alleges that a man arrested in Louisiana on suspicion of possessing child sexual abuse material was using Roblox at the time he was taken into custody last month. It was also claimed he used voice-altering technology to lure and sexually exploit minors on the platform (via The Independent).
According to a report last year, 20 per cent of Roblox’s 82 million users are under the age of nine. Louisiana State Representative Lauria Schlegal has praised the news. “For a platform that has been described in the news as having a pedophile problem, you would think Roblox would make drastic changes. But they have consistently shown they put profits over child safety,” she wrote on X.
For the last couple of years, I have passed a number of child online protection bills. And every year, Roblox hires lobbyists to oppose and actively work to stall my bills. This session, a Roblox executive personally came down to Louisiana to work against my Duty of Care bill.… https://t.co/TDgNr1Tf1V

Roblox has yet to comment on the lawsuit but earlier this week, the company did defend their decision to block a user who claimed to hunt down and expose sexual predators on Roblox.
“While [vigilante] groups may appear to have the public’s interest at heart, they are in fact acting in ways that could be harmful to others, both on and off our platform,” said Roblox’s chief safety officer Matt Kaufman.”Rather than taking actions that violate our policies and potentially creating additional risk, we encourage users to report issues through the official channels so we can investigate quickly and effectively.”
Earlier this year it was confirmed Roblox was involved in an “active investigation” by the US Government. However the extent of Roblox’s involvement, or who the subject of the investigation actually is, hasn’t been revealed. The US Securities and Exchange Commission said sharing any further information would cause “harm to the ongoing enforcement proceedings” and Roblox hasn’t responded to any requests for comment.
