Sydney Sweeney’s Republican voting history unearthed amid jeans advert controversy

It’s been revealed that Sydney Sweeney was a registered Republican in the lead-up to the 2024 US election, amid controversy surrounding her recent commercial for American Eagle jeans.

A report from The Guardian revealed that the Euphoria star registered to vote on June 14 2024, after buying a mansion in Florida. According to publicly available records, she listed her political affiliation as Republican.

Sweeney caused controversy recently by appearing in an ad for American Eagle jeans, revolving around the pun-based slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans”, with one commercial showing the actor describing the effects of genes on the human body.

The commercial received some backlash, with many on social media quick to criticise the “jeans” and “genes” homophone, and suggest that pairing the actor – who has blue eyes and blonde hair – with the tagline makes it feel like it has racist undertones and is reminiscent of dog-whistling eugenics.

Doja Cat and Lizzo have both weighed in on the controversy, with the former mocking the ad on TikTok, while the latter responded to an image of her in denim with the caption: “My jeans are black…”.

On August 2, American Eagle gave a response to the campaign, insisting “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.”

Sweeney’s registration follows criticism she received in 2023, after photos from her mother’s 60th birthday party seemingly showed guests wearing MAGA (Make American Great Again) merch in support of the controversial former president and Blue Lives Matter T-shirts, a countermovement to Black Lives Matter in the US.

The actor Leter described the photos as “misinterpreted”, remarking: “People are so fast to build someone up, and then they love tearing them down.”

US President Donald Trump commented on the news of her voting registration, telling a reporter: “Now I love her ad!” The politician added, “You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans … I’m glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic!”

Recently, Sweeney was described as a “future Oscar winner” following the announcement that her film Christy will premiere at Toronto Film Festival in September.
