The Last Of Us

The second season of HBO’s adaptation of The Last Of Us is well underway but some viewers are fed up with gamers “ruining” the show with their negativity.

The first season of The Last Of Us took heavy inspiration from the original video game while season two is based on The Last Of Us Part 2. HBO bosses have said the show could run for another two seasons but showrunner Craig Mazin has promised it won’t go beyond the games.

Because of this, HBO has more time to flesh out the backstory of characters such as Isaac Dixon (who was introduced in the most recent episode) and have made changes to the story. For example, the show introduced a three-month gap between the death of Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) revenge mission to Seattle.

Mazin and The Last Of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann have also said they weren’t bothered about casting actors who looked exactly like their game counterparts. “It’s just different priorities and how you approach it,” Druckmann explained. “We need people to really capture the essence of those characters and we value performance over anything else.”

These changes have irritated some gamers, who’ve been voicing their opinions on the dedicated Reddit for HBO’s The Last Of Us. Because of the two different audiences, every episode has two discussion threads – one for gamers and one for people who are experiencing the story for the first time – but that hasn’t stopped them clashing.

“Game fans are ruining the show for everyone on here,” one fan wrote after the most recent episode. “I’m so so deeply tired of the game fans being so damn annoyingly negative about the show. This is not meant to be a 1:1 rip of the game.”

“Stuff is different because it’s a different medium but different does not automatically mean bad,” replied one fan. “Criticism is fine, but when the crux of it is ‘it was done differently, thus bad’, I think we’re coming at it from the wrong point,” added another.

“It’s genuinely so weird to me, because for all intents and purposes the show is very very close to the game. The whole series so far is closer to the game it’s based on than any other live action tv show or movie based on a video game. People should be happy about that. This is extremely faithful. And somehow it’s still not good enough,” wrote a third fan.

“As a game fan, I’m relieved I’m not watching a 1:1 adaptation. If I wanted that, I’d just play the game,” said one The Last Of Us gamer. “It’s really exciting to know the basic plot but be surprised week after week by how they go about telling it slightly differently and with new things added in,” added another.

Kaitlyn Dever has spoken about the backlash she’s received for playing Abby, while Ramsey has admitted that they were “fixated” on looking video game accurate ahead of season two.

In other news, a fan has used hit game Cult Of The Lamb as inspiration for a number of high fashion outfits that wouldn’t look out of place at The Met Gala.
