The New York Times has unveiled a new way to play their popular spelling game Wordle to celebrate Wordle Day.

The game’s current developers have decided May 6 (which is also known as 05/06 in North America) is Wordle Day.

“Because Wordle uses five letters with six guesses to find a secret word, we thought May 6 would be the perfect date to celebrate the game that has sparked a joyful daily routine for so many people across the globe,” said New York Times Wordle Editor Tracy Bennett yesterday.

To celebrate the occasion, the New York Times unveiled a new way to play. Wordle Golf is a specially-curated series of puzzles that can be played competitively. “The rules are simple: Grab some friends, solve a puzzle and mark your score. The player with the lowest score wins,” explains the announcement. “You can either play over a period of days (typically nine), or you can try our 18 puzzle Wordle Golf course, curated by Tracy Bennett, at your own pace.”

A version of Wordle Golf was first created back in 2023 as an alternative way to play the hit spelling game.

Earlier this year Everdeen Mason, editorial director of New York Times Games, revealed that more than 5.6 million people had their Wordle streaks broken by the word “Corer”.

She went on to reveal that 5.3 billion Wordle games were played in 2024, with 2.8 million people starting each puzzle with the same guess. The most popular opening move was “adieu”. According to Wordle’s own automated assistant, the best word to begin with is “slate” though “stare”, “audio” and “crane” are also very popular options among players.

Wordle was originally created by indie developer Josh Wardle before it was acquired by the New York Times in 2022 for a price “in the low seven figures.” The game is still free-to-play but subscribers do get access to more puzzles.

In other news, Rockstar Games has shared a load of new information about Grand Theft Auto 6 – but it doesn’t look like the game will be launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 or PC.
