Xbox chief Phil Spencer is seemingly not interested in a big screen adaptation of Call Of Duty, despite the success of A Minecraft Movie.

Despite middling reviews, A Minecraft Movie has become a box office smash and inspired chaotic scenes in cinemas around the world. The film was made in collaboration with Mojang, the studio behind the hit video game, which is owned by Microsoft.

In a new interview with Variety, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer was asked what game will be next to get a Hollywood adaptation, with both Call Of Duty and World Of Warcraft floated as possible suggestions.

“The video game business is successful by itself. It doesn’t need this outlet,” he explained. “Let’s never turn this into something where every franchise has to have a game or a movie or a TV show. It’s got to be about the creative outlet that linear media offers for our franchises.”

However he did say gaming fans could expect further adaptations. “We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more. It’s hard for me to tease any specific thing, because while I know all of these things that are in the creative process, I want to give them time and I don’t want to put any undue pressure on them,” he added.

Spencer went on to say that Microsoft decides which adaptations to green-light based on the team having “a unique point of view around what they want to get done” and finding a partner that “really understands the franchise and the core of what these worlds are.”

“The next thing is always the most important thing and you got to make sure that you have a culture of teams that are willing to take risks and bets on doing kind of cool, innovative, new things,” he added.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 was released at the end of last year and became one of the most popular entries in the long-running franchise. It was also the first Call Of Duty game to launch on Xbox Game Pass. Yesterday (April 15) it was announced that 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 would be joining the service at the start of next month.

Speaking to NME last year, Black Ops 6‘s composer Jack Wall said the game “plays like a movie” with creators taking heavy inspiration from ’90s action flicks. Lead narrative producer Natalie Pohorski went on to say that a Call Of Duty film would be “awesone” but “there’s nothing planned at the moment, unfortunately.”

In other news, Walton Goggins has teased the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout adaptation, promising fans that the show will take things to a “whole ‘nother level”. Earlier this year, he said the new episodes would “blow [the first season] out of the water”.

A release date for Fallout season two has yet to be announced, with filming currently underway.
