Challengers filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has reportedly locked in his next project.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Guadagnino is fast-tracking a film titled Artificial, a retelling of the real-life 2023 OpenAI saga. The film is being put together at Amazon MGM Studios, and production is being aimed to begin this summer.

A cast has yet to be attached to the film, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Andrew Garfield, Anora‘s Yura Borisov and A Complete Unknown‘s Monica Barbaro are circling roles for the project. Filming is expected to take place in Italy and San Francisco.

The film will tackle the OpenAI saga in late 2023 that saw co-founder and CEO Sam Altman being fired from the company due to increasing concerts over AI, safety and accusations of abusive behaviour. Just five days later, he was reinstated into the company following a revolt.

Though castings have yet to been finalised, sources tell THR that Garfield would ideally play Altman, while Yura Borisov portrays Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder who campaigned for Altman’s initial removal from OpenAI. Barbaro is being sought after for the role of CTO Mira Murati.

Artificial will mark Guadagnino’s third collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios following last year’s acclaimed tennis drama Challengers starring Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor, and this year’s upcoming film After The Hunt with Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri.

His last project was December’s Queer, starring Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Omar Apollo and more. Queer received a four-star review from NME, describing it as “far from James Bond”: “Craig delivers one of his best performances to date as Lee, investing him with a palpable world-weariness and making you feel every moment of hope, desire, ecstasy and crushing disappointment.”

Guadagnino was next scheduled to adapt DC’s Sgt Rock with Craig, but the project has seemingly been removed from the director’s slate following Craig’s exit from the film.
