The second season of The Last Of Us is airing now, and fans are already wondering: does Dina die in the original video game? Here’s everything you need to know.
The show stars Bella Ramsey as Ellie, who may hold the key to humanity’s survival in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a deadly fungal outbreak.
Adapted from the Naughty Dog game of the same name, the series began by following Ellie’s journey with Joel, a hardened smuggler played by Pedro Pascal. The second season sees Ellie grappling with the emotional fallout of the events at the end of season one, as she develops a close relationship with Dina (Isabela Merced) while on a revenge mission.
The first season of the show took heavy inspiration from the game, while season two is based on The Last Of Us Part 2. HBO bosses have said the show could run for another two seasons but showrunner Craig Mazin has promised that the show’s storylines won’t go beyond the games’ source material.
In a four-star review of season two, NME wrote: “At its best, The Last Of Us is unsettling enough to make you question your own hypothetical moral code. When every day is about survival and making sense of post-apocalyptic chaos, does taking a life become easier, or somehow even harder? This show doesn’t just go deep narratively – it also cuts deep emotionally.”
Does Dina die in The Last Of Us video game?
No – Dina does not die in The Last of Us Part II. Despite being placed in several dangerous situations, she survives the events of the game. Dina and Ellie’s relationship is central to the story’s emotional arc, especially as they attempt to build a life together away from the violence that surrounds them.
About halfway through the game, in events depicted in season two, episode four of the HBO series, Dina discovers she is pregnant with Jesse’s child. After enduring a traumatic series of events, including being held hostage by Abby and her group, Dina eventually retreats with Ellie to a peaceful farmhouse, where they try to raise the baby. However, Ellie’s inability to let go of her need for revenge against Abby leads to their separation.
Despite Dina’s pleas for her to stay, Ellie ultimately chooses to leave and track down Abby one last time. Her decision devastates Dina, who warns that she won’t be there when Ellie returns. Ellie leaves anyway, driven by guilt and trauma.
When Ellie finally returns home – emotionally and physically broken – the farmhouse is empty. Dina and JJ are gone. The game doesn’t show where they went or whether there’s hope for reconciliation, but it is strongly implied that she has chosen to leave to protect herself and her son.
