Murder in a Small Town Season 2’s Big Loss Will Rock the Team

There is nothing we hate more than when a character gets a quick exit when a show returns, since there was no closure.
While I’ve seen this a lot across the Law & Order universe, I had hoped Murder in a Small Town was safe from this travesty.
Unfortunately, we received word that Mya Lowe, who played Corporal Edwina Yen, won’t return for Murder in a Small Town Season 2.
That news is crushing since she built so many relationships with the Gibsons police department, and I’m afraid the new corporal was hired to replace her.
There Were More Stories About Corporal Yen
There was so much more the writers could have done with Corporal Yen. She had a rich history, having secrets that she revealed to Cassandra.
Corporal Yen was motivated to prove herself, and I had hoped the series would have explored her family history and why she chose to work in law enforcement, including why she transferred to Gibsons.
Everyone has a story about this sleepy town.
The writers had just started showing more of Isabella and Corporal Yen’s friendship, and it would have been a lovely beat to see them interact outside of work more often.
Friendships define a show, and Corporal Yen’s presence will be sorely missed.
Corporal Yen Deserved to Have An Exit Story
While Corporal Yen wasn’t the lead character, she was a vital part of the team, solving cases with Karl and Sid.
You can’t build a successful procedural if you trade in an ensemble cast each season. Viewers care about the characters and their relationships.
Corporal Yen was friends with everyone on the team in different ways, and this one will hurt.
Hopefully, she transferred elsewhere and did not die because of a case. This is Gibsons, after all.
It also adds insult to injury that Corporal Yen will be written off, and Constable Andy Kendrick remains.
I’ve tried to enjoy the charming idiot, but he was only enjoyable when Corporal Yen mentored him. Now, who will take him under his wing?
Generally, FOX shows don’t explain exits after the exit as a rule. That’s a Law & Order universe trademark.
We can only hope it was unavoidable.
During the last two episodes of Murder in a Small Town Season 1, the series delved deeper into Corporal Yen’s life, and she seemed so happy that she made Karl and Syd proud.
I’m sad we’ll never see them interact again.
I’ll Try to Give the New Corporal a Chance
Realistically, I know it’s not the new corporal’s fault.
However, Corporal Layla Jackson (Bethany Brown) sounds eerily similar to Corporal Yen. She’s capable, charming, and vibes well with the team.
The team is likely understaffed since Corporal Yen is gone, and that causes Corporal Jackson to become overwhelmed.
I’ll admit it — her story sounds intriguing.
Still, it sounded similar to when EP Jeff Wachtel suggested that Corporal Yen would work through her personal demons in Season 2 after telling Cassandra she felt guilty for taking credit for solving a crime she didn’t.
What happened? Were the EPs not able to secure Mya Lowe for Murder in a Small Town Season 2, but they wanted a similar story?
We’ll never know.
I suspect the characters and the fans will miss Corporal Yen, but hopefully the writing is good, and we’ll eventually accept the new corporal.
Over to you, Murder in a Small Town Fanatics.
Are you surprised Mya Lowe won’t be returning? Will you miss Corporal Yen?
