Jimmy Kimmel has secured Italian citizenship as Trump targets talkshow hosts

Jimmy Kimmel revealed he has obtained Italian citizenship while disparaging Donald Trump’s second term in office.

The talk show host has been a longtime critic of the US president, and, during an appearance on The Sarah Silverman Podcast, confirmed he had obtained Italian citizenship while discussing the current political climate.

When the comedian noted that a slew of Americans – including the likes of Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell – who didn’t approve of Trump had sought dual citizenship elsewhere amid the current state of affairs, Kimmel replied: “I did get Italian citizenship, I do have that.”

He continued: “What’s going on is… as bad as you thought it was gonna be, it’s so much worse. It’s just unbelievable. I feel like it’s probably even worse than [Trump] would like it to be.”

Throughout both of Trump’s terms, Kimmel often criticised him in monologues and jokes on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the current contract for which runs out for Kimmel in 2026.

News of his dual citizenship comes after Trump speculated Kimmel’s show could be “next” on the chopping block after CBS announced it was ending The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in May of next year.

In a press conference last week, Trump doubled down on the claim while also mentioning Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon: “Fallon has no talent. Kimmel has no talent. They’re next. They’re going to be going. I hear they’re going to be going. I don’t know, but I would imagine because they’d get — you know, Colbert has better ratings than Kimmel or Fallon.”

Elsewhere in the podcast episode, Silver and Kimmel’s conversation moved on to celebrities and internet personalities like Joe Rogan expressing regret over supporting some of Trump’s policies.

Kimmel said he didn’t believe the “fuck you, you supported him” mentality was helpful, adding: “The door needs to stay open. If you wanna change your mind, that’s so hard to do.

“If you want to admit you were wrong, that’s hard and so rare to do, you are welcome.”

Meanwhile, fellow comedian and TV host Rosie O’Donnell recently shared fears that The View will be axed for not politically aligning with Trump.

She regularly feuded with the President during her own stint on the daytime talk show and remains one of his most vocal critics, having moved to Ireland after he was re-elected and dismissing threats from the him over her US citizenship.

Last month, Ellen DeGeneres similarly revealed that she made a permanent move to the UK because of Trump‘s re-election. Back in 2024, it was reported that the US comedian and talk show host had relocated to England with wife Portia de Rossi following last year’s election, which saw the former Republican President return to the White House, a move she’s looking to make indefinite.
