Classic ‘Grand Theft Auto’ game could be rereleased later this year

A classic Grand Theft Auto game could be rereleased later this year, according to industry insiders.

Grand Theft Auto 4 was originally released in 2008 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The game is still playable on modern consoles, but no improvements have ever been made to the performance or graphics, meaning it’s not exactly a polished gaming experience.

However that could change later this year. According to Rockstar insider Tez2, an updated port of Grand Theft Auto 4 is in the works. On the GTA forums, they were asked if they’d “heard anything about a potential GTA 4 remaster/port for modern gen consoles?”

“Someone at Rockstar hinted at the 4 port, and by now it should’ve gone up a year in development,” they replied. “We may end up seeing it drop later this year. If they follow their plan laid out from the pandemic days, they’ll do a Max Payne 3 port after GTA 4.”

Tez2 said the port was one of the reasons an ambitious fan-project to rebuild GTA 4’s Liberty City in GTA Online was suddenly shut down at the start of the year.

In 2021, Rockstar released an upgraded bundle of the first three GTA games for modern consoles. However Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy launched with multiple bugs and was met with backlash from fans and critics alike. The following year it was claimed plans to remaster Grand Theft Auto 4 and Red Dead Redemption were scrapped due to the negativity around The Trilogy.

In recent months, GTA 5 returned to Xbox Game Pass and the boss of GTA publishers Take-Two spoke about working with Nintendo to bring their games to the bigger, more powerful Switch 2. “There was a time when Nintendo platforms were geared at younger audiences and that was reflected in our release schedule,” said Strauss Zelnick. “Today, with Switch and potentially with Switch 2, the Switch device can support any audience.”

Initially fans thought Grand Theft Auto 6 would be coming to the Switch 2 but the Nintendo console wasn’t mentioned when Rockstar confirmed their release plans for the upcoming game. However, perhaps an upgraded version of GTA 4 will be released for the Switch 2 instead.

Grand Theft Auto 6 fans also think GTA 4’s Liberty City map will feature in the new game, after a number of Easter Eggs were spotted in the new trailer.

In other news, Tony Hawk has revealed he has “aspirations” for a remastered version of Tony Hawk’s Underground to be released.
