Henry Cavill's Divisive Superman Movie 'Man of Steel' Is a Streaming Hit on HBO Max With James Gunn's Reboot in Theaters

Superman hasn't had the most straightforward cinematic run over the past decades. There are certainly giant hits like Christopher Reeve's Superman from 1978, and the likes of Smallville, but the character has often been the star of some very middling and occasionally very divisive adaptations. It's one of Clark Kent's most polarizing and controversial films to date, which has recently found renewed success on streaming. Superman is currently going through another rebranding, with James Gunn's take on the character now playing in theaters and officially kicking off the rebooted DCU. But, before Gunn got his hands on the character, Superman was at the mercy of another filmmaker under the very divisive DCEU. That version of Superman made many changes to the tone of the character. But, despite that, it has amassed a cult following (literally, in some cases), who repeatedly call for a sequel to be made, and for its star to return for another outing as Supes.
