James Corden asked “many times” for post calling him a “tiny cretin” to be removed, says restaurant owner

James Corden made multiple requests for an Instagram post calling him a “tiny cretin” to be taken down, says the restaurant owner who made the upload.
The scathing post against the Gavin & Stacey star and former host of The Late Late Show was first shared in 2022. It was made by restaurateur Keith McNally, who hit out at Corden for rude behaviour towards members of staff at the Balthazar restaurant in New York.
In the caption, McNally described one incident in which Corden was “extremely nasty” to a waiter, and another where he told a member of staff that he would go into the kitchen and cook an omelette for himself if “you can’t do your job”.
He also used the caption to describe him as a “tiny cretin” and confirm that he had been banned from the restaurant – although he reversed this decision a few days later.
Now, speaking with The Telegraph, the restaurateur has admitted that he “enjoyed the power I had over him too much”, and revealed that he received numerous requests from Corden to have the post deleted.
In the interview, he claimed that The Late Late Show host “texted many times asking me to take it down”, and said that he responded by saying he would only do so if Corden admitted to his poor behaviour.
Soon afterwards, Corden made a statement on his US chat show, apologising and admitting that his actions at the restaurant were uncalled for.
“Because I didn’t shout or scream, I didn’t get up out of my seat, I didn’t call anyone names or use derogatory language, I’ve been walking around thinking that I haven’t done anything wrong,” he said at the beginning of the episode. “But the truth is I have made a rude, rude comment. And it was wrong. It was an unnecessary comment, it was ungracious to the server.”
Despite the apology, McNally kept the original post up, and then made another update, offering Corden free food at Balthazar for a decade if he apologised directly to the two servers he insulted.
The original post still remains on Instagram, nearly three years after it was first shared.
While Corden eventually apologised for his actions at the restaurant, he initially dismissed the claims from McNally in an interview with The New York Times.
“I haven’t done anything wrong, on any level,” he told the outlet in 2022. “I feel so Zen about the whole thing. Because I think it’s so silly. I just think it’s beneath all of us. It’s beneath you. It’s certainly beneath your publication.”
Other criticism towards Corden has also come from Mel B, who described him as “the rudest celebrity”, Sharon Osbourne, who called him a serial name-dropper, and Lily Allen, who named him as her “beg friend”.
In response to the backlash, Corden’s Gavin & Stacey co-star Mathew Horne defended him and said that negative comments come from a place of jealousy. Fellow co-star Rob Brydon – who plays Uncle Bryn in the sitcom – then defended Corden too.
Later in the recent interview with McNally, the restauranteur spoke about his new memoir, I Regret Almost Everything, and shared which famous faces have left a lasting impression after visiting his restaurants.
Woody Allen was the person he named as the most “consistently charming”, while Patti Smith, on the other hand, allegedly “reduced a waitress to tears” back in the ‘70s. In the memoir, he describes the iconic songwriter as “the James Corden of her day”.
Corden moved back to England last year after spending several years living in Los Angeles, hosting the aforementioned talk show on CBS. It ran from 2015 to 2023. Over Christmas, he joined up with his Gavin & Stacey co-stars one last time for a final episode, which was described by fans as “perfection”.
