Why Marvel Movies Are Released the First Weekend of May

This week marks the release of Thunderbolts*, the latest film from Marvel Studios and the kickoff to the summer movie season. Thunderbolts* continues a long tradition of movies based on Marvel Comics being released on the first weekend in May. Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, Doctor Strange, The Guardians of the Galaxy, and now the Thunderbolts have all held this coveted spot. Even as big movies have expanded to earlier in the year, there is something special about that first weekend in May, and it feels wrong when a Marvel superhero movie isn't there to start the month.
