Denzel Washington and Spike Lee reunite for A24’s HIGHEST 2 LOWEST

Denzel Washington and Spike Lee have collaborated for the fifth time on new A24/Apple crime thriller HGHEST 2 LOWEST.

The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this month and will arrive in cinemas on August 22. It will then land on streaming on September 5.

With a script penned by William Alan Fox, the film is a loose adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, which follows a businessman deciding whether to use his wealth to further his career or save a child’s life. In turn, that novel is a reinterpretation of Ed McBain’s mystery novel The King’s Ransom.

“One of the best things about film school is that you get introduced to world cinema, not just Hollywood,” Lee said about the film last year at the Red Sea Film Festival. “Seeing Kurosawa’s film ‘Rashomon’ and its structure inspired me to make ‘She’s Gotta Have It.’ In ‘Rashomon,’ you have three people who witness a rape, and each gives their own opinion of what happened. In ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ Nola Darling has three boyfriends who each see her in a different way. From the very beginning of my career, I was influenced by Kurosawa.”

HIGHEST 2 LOWEST also stars A$AP Rocky, Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson and rapper Ice Spice.

Meanwhile, fans of the actor have taken to social media to express their dismay at the actor missing out on a Tony nomination.

The current production of William Shakespeare’s Othello, starring Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, has been surprisingly snubbed from the nomination. The show broke records as the highest grossing revival in Broadway history, making back its investment within nine weeks of its run (reports indicate only one out of five Broadway shows ever make their money back).

It is not the first time that Washington has been snubbed for an award this year, as many believed he should have been nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Gladiator II.
